Legacy of Tears
Lord Falel Dorcral
Seasoned dwarven mercenary and renowned combat trainer
Over a century ago, the Dwarves of Norungarr ruled the mountain. The riches and beauty and wonders they crafted there are beyond the words of the most gifted bards. King Norungarr traded freely with the surrounding kingdoms and it was a time of great prosperity.
Then came the goblin-kin and the Great Goblin War. In vast numbers, they swarmed through the dwarven strongholds like ants. It took many years, and the help of elven allies, but the Goblin Horde was dispersed. Sadly, the Dwarven Kingdom was all but destroyed. Unable to repair the damage to their Strongholds, or protect them from the horrors in the deep, the Dwarves were forced to leave the mountains. Many fled north to harsh Dorminarr or corrupt Faelos. Others were embraced by the Silent Queen of Telarianne. Their leaders became the Dwarven Lords, nobility of the Kingdom, and they became part of the land’s society.
Now, there are 12 Dwarven Noble Houses throughout Telarainne, and the dwarven people live in peace. However, many feel the Call of the Deep, and make expeditions into the Norungarr to reclaim the Broken Strongholds. Few return.
Falel is the second son of Lord Norrak Dorcral, Fourth of the Dwarven Lords. Falel’s brother Norson is his heir. House Dorcral resides in the capital of Fal Tannor, holds lands and mines near those of House Durig in the Eastern Foothills, and influences much of the commerce between the capital and the mines.
Falel had a love. Ovthal Durig was the eldest daughter of Lord Torthur Durig, the First of the Dwarven Lords. She was the most capable female Falel had ever met. Her knowledge and combat skills were unmatched. She felt the powerful Call of the Deep, and spent much of her father’s fortune researching the location of the Lost Strongholds. For a time, Falel would have followed her anywhere. Then he began to doubt. Was she simply using him for his family’s influence? Was she so obsessed that she would sacrifice anything for her goals? A crazy female always pays off in the bedroom, but sometimes it crosses a line. Falel’s doubt drove him away, and their last words were harsh.
With little left for Falel to claim, he left to travel the world and seek his fortune (and forget a woman). There, he became a mercenary, battling
goblinoids and Orges in many of the surrounding countries. Falel helped break the half orc bandit tribes in Faelnor. You and his team brought down a troll in the Pass of Mooncast Shadow. Falel has made contacts, and a few enemies in many of the surrounding countries, but something always brings him back to Fal Tannor in Tellarainne. Word of his exploits has spread, and many of the noble class have hired Falel to teach their toothpick wielding elven whelps. Despite this growing fame, Ovthal had avoided attending any Court functions Falel appears at. The excuses are always thin. Some days… Falel would see her again.
One day, a prominent member of the Royal family named Prince Renar Fal Tannor, hires Falel to teach and protect his ever so soft little boy. What’s more, the boy is being sent to the northern border to fight some of the goblins that sprinkle down from the mountains for a season or so. Falel is 60 (40 in human years) and had thought such babysitting was behind him. Hard to say no to Royal gold though. The pay is 40gp/month (which Duke Lornodel in Brinigarr will pay while the Prince is north). Falel is promised a further 40gp/month of service once the Princeling is safely returned.
